The Agouti have an average life span of 12 to 15 years. Gestation is 105 to 120 days, the mother usually giving birth to 2 babies. Babies are born fully furred, able to see and are able to run within one hour. They are weaned from the mother at approximately 20 weeks of age.

The Agouti is native to the forest and grasslands of Central and South America. This animal is a very important rodent in Brazil as it is one of the few animals that have the chisel like incisors needed to crack the shell on Brazil Nuts thereby dispensing the seeds. They have an iron like compound in their incisors which make their teeth appear to be yellowish-orange in color. We give our agoutis all the pits from the fruit that we feed the other critters

The Agouti is a very fast runner. They have been clocked at speeds of 30 miles per hour leaping as much as 20feet at a time. They can jump 6 feet straight up in the air. They feed in large groups but tend to sleep alone. They are hunted extensively for their meat and skin.
