Arctic Fox

Arctic Fox

Artic Foxes are sexually mature at around 10-12 months of age. After a gestation period of 52 days the babies called kits are born. Average litter size is 1-6 but litters as large as 24 have been recorded. Both the mother & father assist in raising of the young. The females leave the family and form their own groups and the males stay with the family. They tend to form monogamous pairs in the breeding season. Young from previous years litters may stay with the parents to help raise younger siblings.

Arctic Fox

The Artic Fox also known as the White Fox, Polar Fox or Snow Fox, is a small fox native to Artic regions. They have a circumpolar range, meaning that it is found throughout the entire Arctic, including the outer edges of Greenland, Russia, Canada, Alaska, as well as in sub artic and alpine areas, such as Iceland and mainland Scandinavia.

Arctic Fox

Living in some of the most frigid extremes the Artic Fox has many adaptations for cold survival. It’s deep, thick fur, a system of countercurrent heat exchange in the circulation of paws to retain core temperature, and a good supply of body fat. The fox has a low surface area to volume ratio, as evidenced by its generally rounded body, short muzzle,
legs & ears. Since there is less surface area exposed, less heat escapes the body.
