The Caracal has a gestation of 78-81 days, females producing a litter of 1 to 4 kittens. The kittens are weaned at 10 weeks but remain with the mother for up to a year. They attain sexual maturity between 12 to 16 months. Males can weigh as much as 40 lbs and females as much as 35 lbs.

Caracals live in the drier savannah and woodland of Africa, Southwest Asia and the Middle East. They are mostly nocturnal but are often spotted in daylight. Also known as the desert lynx because of their tufted ears.

The caracal is a solitary animal. Social interactions are usually limited to periods of mating with the exception of mothers with kittens. They can live up to 19years in captivity.
