The Rusty Spotted Genet is native to most of Africa excluding the rain forests. Although cat like in appearance and behaviors, they are not a cat at all. Their closest relative is the mongoose. Genets are mainly nocturnal but are often spotted during the day in the rainy season.

The genet is classified as a carnivore but is omnivorous and will eat whatever is most available. They have the same jaw pressure and the same amount of teeth (40) as a lion. Genets have perianal glands that produce a strong smelling substance called civet. Civet is used as a perfume base as well as a medicine.
