Llamas are native to South America. Primarily Peru, Bolivia & the Andes Mountains. They are one of the oldest domesticated species in the world, having been first domesticated by the Inca’s around 4000 BC.One of the first importations back into North America was in the early 1900’s by W.R.Hearst. They began to become popular as fiber producers, guardians & pets in the 1970’s

Prized for their fiber which is warmer, lighter, & stronger then sheep's wool. Llamas come in every imaginable color and color combination. Although solid colored is preferred for fiber production. The fiber is hollow, making it exceptionally warm. It is also oil free and has no inherent odor. These qualities make this a dream fiber for spinners. Your average llama will produce approximately 3 pounds of fiber per year. Unlike sheep’s wool that is sold by the pound llama fiber is sold by the ounce. |
