After a gestation period of 52 days the mother gives birth to 1-8 babies called kits. Red foxes are very social animals, whose groups are led by a mated pair which monopolizes breeding. Subordinates within a group are typically the young of the mated pair, who remain with their parents to assist in caring for new kits. In the wild there life span is only 2-4 years but they have been known to live to 20 years in captivity.

Many people do not realize that Ontario is home to three fox species: the Red, Grey and Arctic. However the Red Fox is the most common. Most people have, at one time or another, seen a red fox since their range encompasses almost all parts of North America except regions well above the Arctic Circle, most of Asia - including the Arabian Desert - all of Europe, North Africa and even south Australia, where it was introduced by settlers in the mid-1800s.

The Red Fox is the largest of the true foxes, as well as being the most geographically spread member of the Carnivore family. Although the red fox tends to displace or even kill its smaller cousins, it is nonetheless vulnerable to attack from larger predators such as wolves, coyotes, jackals and medium and large felines. |
